Samoa Joe vs. Chris Sabin from TNA No Surrender 2005: Match Spotlight Series #47

If you forget how hot Samoa Joe used to be in TNA, then this is a great match to remind you.  Meanwhile, Chris Sabin was still in the process of figuring his character out; Sabin was already a good worker here, but his character wasn't as interesting as it is now.

Watching old TNA matches is a lot of fun, but it also reminds me how much potential the company had.

Thoughts on the Match:

Sabin used his quickness to avoid trouble early on; Sabin was actually got most of the offense in the first three minutes, but Joe cut him off by using his power and strength.  Joe used some of his standard moveset to work over Sabin.  Sabin came back with some punches and a nice springboard dropkick, which forced Joe roll to the outside.  Sabin followed that up with a dropkick off the apron.  Back in the ring, Sabin hits a springboard legdrop for a nearfall!  Sabin goes for Cradle Shock, but Joe counters it with a bringing German suplex for a nearfall.  Snap Powerslam from Joe: 1...2...NO!  Sabin came back with a springboard tornado DDT: 1...2...NO!  Powerbomb by Joe: 1...2...NO!: STF by Joe!  Sabin almost escapes so Joe transitions it into a Crippler Crossface.  Sabin makes the ropes!  "TNA, TNA" chants from the crowd.  Joe sets up for the Muscle Buster, but Sabin fights out of it and hits a LIGER BOMB!: 1...2...NO!  Crowd bought that as the finish.  Enzuigiri by Sabin; Sabin to the top rope, but Joe kicks Sabin's legs out.  MUSCLE BUSTER!  Joe locks in the Coquina Clutch and Sabin passes out.

Very good match here.  Not the complete squash that one would expect from a 2005 Joe match, which put over Sabin even with the loss.
Match Rating: ***3/4
